Journey Across America - Georgia

This post is part of a 50 state Journey Across America. For information on the basics of this project check out this post. I wasn't planning on documenting this project until we were six states in, so the first five states are a bit lacking in original photos, but the next 45 will be full of them!

I said Georgia, oh Georgia
No peace I find
Just an old sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind
                   - Georgia on my Mind (State song of Georgia)

The Books:
We began by reading P is for Peach and then Bean used the information she learned to make a notebook page for her United States scrapbook.

I could only find one, ONE, Georgia picture book that we liked. Sad. Please let me know if you have any that you enjoy.

The good news is that our one book is so sweet. Deep in the Swamp uses the rhythm of the poem Over in the Meadow (my kids think the linked The Wiggles version is hilarious) and teaches about inhabitants of the Okefenokee Swamp.

Kevin also taught the kids about Georgia using the Our United States of America: Catholic Social Studies textbook.

The Food:
Oh, I really made a mistake trying to cut corners on this one! We made a boxed version of a peach cobbler and it was horrendous. Don't do it. Either make the real thing or make another peach treat. Hey, you could even just eat peaches. And don't forget to serve it with Coca-Cola, which was invented in, and continues to be headquartered in, Georgia.

The Activity:
For our Georgia activity we made an earth mound. The Etowah Indian Mound is a well preserved archaeological site located in Bartow county Georgia. It is believed that the Mississippians used these mounds for worship.

We made a very mini-mound using a pie tin, potting soil, and grass seed. To form the mound we overfilled a tin with soil and then placed another tin on top to compact the soil into a mound shape. The kids planted the seeds and watered it for a few weeks, so I counted this as a science experiment too.

Over time the kids trimmed the mound as it continued to fill out. I think cutting the grass was their favorite part.

Up next is Connecticut!

Be saints, it's worth it!
