The Books:
We began by reading G is for Granite and then Bean used the information she learned to make a notebook page for her United States scrapbook.
We also read so many wonderful New Hampshire books this week!
Ox-Cart Man tells the story of a New England family's work year and at the end of the book the father goes to Portsmouth, NH to sell all of their goods. Tuttle's Red Barn is about the passing on of a family farm through several generations. Lucy's Summer is a sweet story of a little girls life in the countryside of New Hampshire. The Bear that Heard Crying tells a true story of a lost girl in the woods who was cared for by a bear until her family found her. And Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost, who spent his adult years living in New Hampshire, is a beautiful classic. It's a Five in a Row book, so you could do all kinds of supplemental things with it. Check out Delightful Learning's extensive lesson plans for some ideas!
Finally, we taught the kids about New Hampshire using the Our United States of America: Catholic Social Studies textbook.
The Food:
For our state food this week we used the suggested Raspberry and Apple Cobbler recipe from The United States Cookbook. It was delicious!
The Craft:
Inspired by Holiday-Kids-Crafts we made our own snowy woods after reading Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. Directions for this craft are with the link.
Bean decided to add to her picture some of the animals we saw hidden in the woods and Pal wanted some fallen over logs in his. We all really enjoyed this craft and I think they turned out beautifully!
