The Books:
We began by reading P is for Palmetto and then Bean used the information she learned to make a notebook page for her United States scrapbook.
We read A Sweet, Sweet Basket for our picture book this week and then watched this Martha Stewart video on how to weave a traditional sweetgrass basket. I thought about trying to weave baskets for our craft, but then remembered that my kids are 7 and 5.
Bean also read The Hurricane Mystery (The Boxcar Children Mysteries #54), which set off a new craze and she's been reading all things Boxcar Children ever since. I'm not a fan of ghosts and hauntings, and some of the mysteries include such plots, so we do read the descriptions and choose accordingly.
We also taught the kids about South Carolina using the Our United States of America: Catholic Social Studies textbook.
The Food:
For our South Carolina fare we made some South Carolina Mustard BBQ Sauce to dip in homemade chicken fingers. It was mustardy. I'm not sure what else to say about it.
And we could not leave out the sweet tea! The kids definitely preferred the peach tea over the original. Somehow milk is the actual state beverage, but I think there was a miscount on that vote.
The Craft:
For our craft the kids made their own Rainbow Row using pastels. It would have been fun to do this on black paper and create a night scene to make the pastels pop out more. Next time, right? I still think they turned out great!
Other:
My kids absolutely loved this short video on South Carolina's State dog, the Boykin Spaniel.
Warning: They asked to buy one after the video. I told them we were getting a new baby instead.
